Boundary Exemption Process
It is common practice within Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) for families to register their children at their Designated School, as all schools in the division provide quality educational programming. You can find your Designated School by using the Versatrans e-Link tool on EIPS' website at www.eips.ca/versatrans-e-link.
In the event of extenuating circumstances, parents/guardians/independent students may wish to apply to a school other than the designated school (School of Choice). Please note the following processes and timelines if you are requesting a School of Choice:
- January 9 to February 15, 2012 - The Boundary Exemption Request form available on EIPS' website at www.eips.ca/boundaries must be completed in full and submitted to the principal of the designated school.
- March 9, 2012 - Principals will contact families regarding the decision about their requests.
- March 16, 2012 - Last day to submit written appeals to Bev Fleming, Associate Superintendent.
- March 23, 2012 - Appeal decisions made and communicated to families.
Boundary Exemption requests made after February 15, 2012 must be submitted directly to Bev Fleming, Associate Superintendent at Central Services (683 Wye Road). Families are dissuaded from this practice unless they move into the division after this date.
Standard EIPS' practices allow students who have been granted a boundary exemption to continue attending their School of Choice until they move to a grade not offered at that school. At that point, should they choose to explore another School of Choice option, they must again submit a Boundary Exemption Request form for the new School of Choice.
Parents/guardians/independent students who are interested in School of Choice busing are responsible for contacting Student Transportation. School of Choice busing is not guaranteed, and families are responsible for the associated transportation fees, if applicable, which are due June 30, 2012. For further information or to make transportation arrangements, please contact EIPS' Student Transportation department at 780-417-8151 or by e-mail at st@eips.ca.
If you have questions regarding the boundary exemption process, please contact Principal Dan Vanderburgh at 780-922-2228 or Bev Fleming, Associate Superintendent at 780-417-8227.
Accountability Pillar Survey
As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we're equipping students for success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of student learning.
From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. In January, parents of students in grades 7 and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. In February, students in grades 7 and 10 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish and Tagalog.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2012, and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.
